Aurora Friends of the Library

MISSION:
The mission of the Aurora Friends of the Library is to actively support the library in promoting education, intellectual stimulation, and reading enjoyment.

PURPOSE:
•    Maintain an association of people interested in the Aurora Public Library
•    Focus public attention on the library
•    Stimulate the use of its resources and services
•    Encourage gifts, endowments and bequests to the library
•    Support and cooperate with the library in developing services and facilities
•    Support the freedom to read

So, just what are Friends (of the Library, that is) for?  We all need a good friend or two to lighten the load, to enjoy adventures with, and to help out when needed.  The Aurora Public Library is no exception, and we are fortunate to have such a group.

One of the main purposes of the Friends is to raise money to purchase items not covered by traditional funding.  In recent years, they have purchased books by local authors, award-winning books and movies, items for the Library of Things, chairs, special bookcases for the children’s area, age-appropriate toys, and additional large print titles.  Materials and prizes are purchased for our Summer Reading Program for children and teens and the Winter Reading Program for adults.

In addition to purchasing tangible items, the Friends have paid stipends to local and/or Minnesota authors to enable them to give presentations at the library.  They have also hosted ALS funded legacy events.

Besides occasional grants, donations, or memorials, the main source of funds comes from their Book Sales.  The Friends is entirely made up of volunteers and these volunteers put on the sales. Anyone can purchase books by donation or buy a stylish, useful red and black canvas bag and fill it with books for the cost of the bag.  The library usually accepts books in good condition for the Book Sales.

Another purpose of Friends is to provide volunteer help to keep the library in tip-top shape.  At Christmas, they decorate the library.  They have also helped weed through magazines to keep them up to date.  All of those volunteer hours are recorded and become part of annual reports.

There are no formal requirements and no dues to join the Aurora Friends of the Library; just a willingness to support the local library. The Friends usually hold 4 regular meetings per year:  February, May, September, and December.   Check the calendar for the next meeting.  If you are interested in joining, you can call the library at 218-229-2021 or email AuroraFriendsoftheLibrary@gmail.com

The Friends are always busy being a good friend!  All are welcome!
